Here is what you need to do to set up a Twitter account and all the considerations you might want to make in relation to the possibilities you may be tweeting about adoption.
So go to the Twitter home page and select that you want to SET UP NEW ACCOUNT. Below are some guidelines on filling in the information you will be asked for to set up a Twitter Account.
This is the screen you should find yourself on….
- Section FULL NAME
Unless you want people on Twitter to know your real name do not type in your REAL or FULL name in the section asking for full name. This is especially important in adoption as you may not want some family members or birth family members being able to trace you or identify you.
Use your first name a nick name or any name you want, when I first joined I went by the name Adoption Bliss, ironic I know. Now I just use Sarah.
This section does not have to be unique.
Next add your E-mail and create a password.
- Section CHOOSE YOUR USERNAME
Now you need to find an Original Name that will become your Twitter tag, This is unique and you will be the only person on Twitter with this name. There can be no spaces and you have only 15 Characters
As you can see my ‘handle’ on this screen is @Adoption12345
Twitter will confirm if the name is available or not.
Once you’ve found something you’re happy with press the big yellow button saying CREATE MY ACCOUNT.
Once you’ve done this it IS possible to change any of the details you’ve just saved. The name, the email or the username can all be altered at a later date if you wish.
You now have a twitter account and can set about tweeting and connecting with other twitter folk. To find other like minded adoption people to follow please see our twitter roll and our contributors page. One other thing you might like to consider before you get started are your Privacy Settings.
For some in people in adoption it is important that what they tweet or say on twitter is only read by the people they choose to be in contact with. If you wish to only by read by those you choose to follow and to also be able to confirm and vet those who would like to follow you, you need to set the Privacy Setting.
In the right hand corner click on the circular cog like icon and a drop box will appear.
Scroll down to Tweet Privacy
Click the box and a tick will appear.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and Save Changes
You will be asked to confirm your password and then the changes will be set.
- Creating your Profile
It is totally optional if you add a location, picture or your personal details, for example being an adoptive parent or how many you children you have and their ages. However here are some tips you might like to consider.
TIP having an image on your Avatar (the image next to your name or on your home page) makes it easier for others on twitter to identify you as they scroll through tweets. It can be an image of anything, your dog your cat, a super hero, but something to make you unique to others.
TIP Providing a little information about yourself, even something silly helps people to connect to you and want to tweet with you. Even your love of coffee or your unusual hobby will make you seem more personable.
Hope this provides you with the basics for getting started, back soon with more useful tips on getting around twitter and making the most of it for you.
